MultiLens is the winning team of Atos Global IT Challenge

Competition winner and finalists chosen from 77 international entries
Paris, 6 June, 2012

Atos, an international IT services company and Worldwide IT Partner for the International Olympic Committee, today announced the winner of its annual IT Challenge; a competition launched in October 2011 to inspire innovation amongst the future generation of IT professionals. The winning team will be given the unique chance to shadow Atos Business Technologists at London 2012.

The team MultiLens from Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven in the Netherlands was announced today as the 2012 IT Challenge winner for its App MultiLens. The team was presented with the gold medal prize by Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Atos, at an awards ceremony, which took place at Atos Head Quarters in Bezons, Paris.

The theme for the first Atos IT Challenge was ‘Smart Mobility’ and attracted 77 entries from teams of up to five students, from a range of universities worldwide. Teams were encouraged to develop innovative context aware applications, that can be used anywhere, anytime and on any device to add value to a business or an individual.

Commenting on the quality of entries, Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Atos, said: “We were impressed by the enthusiasm, creativity and quality of entries received throughout this competition. The teams presented Smart Mobility solutions that were well thought-out and showcased how, through innovative thinking, IT can be a valuable problem solver.”

Chosen by the IT Challenge judging panel, MultiLens beat two other finalists, Snackium, Coorporative State University Baden-Wuerttemberg Mannheim (DHBW) Germany and HouseFix, University of Warwick UK to the first prize.

The finalists

Multilens, Fontys Hogeschool, Netherlands
A creative idea that allows for a different viewing experience when visiting a sport event, concert, or business conference – a true leverage of smart mobile devices. The solution created by team MultiLens is almost ready to go to the market and has already been used at the Fontys. The team showed a professional way of presenting their app; their pitch was sharp and to the point. The overall conclusion was that the quality of the app, the presentation and the business model was truly outstanding and a great achievement.

Snackium, Coorporative State University Baden-Wuerttemberg Mannheim (DHBW), Germany
The team convinced the jury that this solution could help in solving one of the issues large venues have throughout Europe – how to generate additional revenue besides selling tickets. With the help of the Snackium app the venues could easily sell more food/drinks or even fan merchandise. Team Snackium conducted some market research and actually had a venue working with them to design the solution. Besides the app for the user, they also took care of the server application for the venue manager. The presentation and video were good and it was easy to understand what the purpose of the app is. Due to the limited time of the IT Challenge, the version with online payment was not ready yet. This would make the app even more interesting.

HouseFix, University of Warwick, UK
The app designed to guard your most valuable asset. The jury liked the idea of combining domotic technology with mobile app technology to not only guard your asset but also to focus on energy savings. The team even looked further to integrate information from local suppliers to help you solve the ‘failures’ plus added a social network dimension. The team’s presentation was very convincing. With the use of cloud services and mobile apps this solution is now able to go to the market.

“This competition encouraged students to achieve their personal best just like our team of Business Technologists are doing in the build up to London 2012. As a forward-looking IT company, we always strive to invest in the future. This competition represents a great opportunity for Atos to show just how much talent exists within the next generation of IT professionals who will shape the companies of the future,” comments Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Atos.

All three finalists were awarded an Atos Diploma for demonstrating outstanding achievement and given the chance to apply for an internship or job within Atos. Each member of MultiLens also wins a trip to the London 2012 Olympic Games including, accommodation and tickets to Olympic events, as well as a behind-the-scenes tour including a visit to the Technology Operations Centre.

MultiLens’ App scored top marks in a range scoring categories including; benefit for end-users and business partners, technical quality and potential market.

Member of the judging panel, Marc Pajon, Vice President of Advanced Projects at Renault, commented on the quality of entries as well as the value of the challenge, by saying: “The IT challenge highlights how innovative and forward thinking Atos is. These students are the driving force behind tomorrow’s IT and the experience that the winners will gain from an internship at Atos is invaluable.”

The shortlisted teams were paired with an Atos Challenge coach from its Scientific Community – a network of employees recognised for their outstanding scientific minds and tasked with enhancing Atos reputation as a innovator and thought-leader in the IT Services industry.

Each year Atos recruits around 7,000 engineers globally. The IT Challenge forms part of Atos Wellbeing@work initiative and supports its objective to encourage and develop talent.
