Almost every organization is under pressure to reduce its carbon emissions, but these objectives, whilst frequently required by regulation, may be seen as conflicting with the commercial objectives of the business. Atos’ Ambition Carbon Free program overcomes this by demonstrating that an appropriate carbon policy can drive profitability.




Atos’ carbon neutral hosting services are the result of three key actions:

• Applying the global Carbon Audit program to all our data centers worldwide
• Engaging The CarbonNeutral Company to help compensate the carbon footprint produced by our datacenters through investment in a wind power project in the Thar Desert, India

Clients that choose to outsource their IT infrastructure and applications to Atos’ carbon neutral datacenters will benefit from the company-wide continuous improvement program aimed at further reducing the CO2 footprint of our data centers.

Social responsibility – wind power project in India
To help compensate the carbon footprint produced by its datacenters, Atos has selected a wind power project in the Thar Desert in India because, in addition to enabling the use of renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions, the project has made a significant contribution to the local community. This contribution includes the provision of clean water supply to local villages, the facilitation of a vaccination program and the reconstruction of a village school.

The project has been validated to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the credits have been verified and registered on the Verified Carbon Standard registry, hosted by APX.
 

What is carbon offsetting?
A carbon offset is a GHG reduction generated by a resource conservation or renewable energy project which would not have happened without access to carbon finance.  GHG reductions from these projects are validated and verified by independent organisations in order to be certified against third party carbon offset standards, such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Gold Standard. 

Carbon offsets are quantified and sold in tonnes (metric tons) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).  Buying and retiring one tonne of carbon offset means there will be one less tonne of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there would otherwise have been.

Businesses purchase carbon offsets in order to compensate for their unavoidable emissions and meet an emission reduction target immediately and efficiently.  When a business purchases a carbon offset it is retired and no longer available for sale or trade, enabling the business to count that reduction towards meeting its target.
