Business Challenge

  • Governments and the emergency services have to predict and respond to an increasing number of natural disasters
  • Lack of common practices across different countries can delay and hinder the response

Our Solution

  • Lead a consortium of 14 organisations to design and implement a standards based Service Oriented Architecture
  • Develop and implement applications for:
    • Flash floods and forest fires in North East Spain
    • Effects of earthquakes / floods on road traffic on the French / Italian border
    • Impact of ship traffic on pollution in the German Bight
    • Forest fires and floods on a pan-European level

The Results

  • Improved service efficiency through improved access to risk management information
  • Reduced costs through increased interoperability and standardisation
  • Contributed to interoperability standards on a global level
  • ORCHESTRA is currently being applied in:
    • the tsunami early warning system in the Indian Ocean (DEWS project)
    • the EO2HEAVEN project (assessing impact of environmental factors on healthcare), which contributes to an OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) testbed and a GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) pilot
    • the Basque Country (MUGAGABE project)
    • a pilot for the 112 Emergency Services of Andalucía (Spain)
